About the Author

I currently live in England. My days are spent in the Project Management field while my nights are spent with books. I'm either reading them or writing the ones that I want to read. My favorite things and in this particular order are books, Korean dramas, ice cream, and people who smile through everything. I consistently tell people that these are the four things they need to be happy but do they believe me? No! Well I believe me, and you should too.

Review

The Beginning of Never is a promising start in a potentially awesome series.

It follows the love (and not so love) story of Nathan and Nora as they try to simultaneously juggle school, hobbies, family, and all of their secret demons that are hoping to keep them apart.

One thing that I really appreciated about this novel was the realistic approach. There was not even a hint of insta-love, which is one of the most common (and most hated) romantic devices used to bring characters together. Actually, their first encounter was kind of an insta-hate situation that may or may not have ended with someone breaking a lunch tray on the other's back.

I loved that Nathan and Nora took their time with the relationship and let it slowly burn for a while before completely jumping into it. I was a little bit annoyed when thinking of Nathan consumed all of Nora's thoughts and actions (which I understand can totally happen in real life), but it did not make for the most exciting reading.

To me, one of the most important aspects of a contemporary is the characters, and I am happy to say that Boroini entirely nailed the cast of this book. At first, I was wary of Nora and her pessimistic view of the world, but then I started to really relate to her and her situation. I slowly found myself growing to love her, even with all of her issues.

On the down side, I also found the plot to be a little bit lacking. The story drifted along wherever the characters decided to take it. Normally, I like more structure and excitement in the overall plot of a story.

You might say that I had a case of insta-love when it came to Nathan (which is totally possible when it comes to fictional characters). I admired his stubborness, selflessness, and general gentleman-like behavior that won my heart, as well as Nora's.

The secondary characters were alright in this story too. They got quite a bit of stage time and still managed to have some development. James was super cute and Elisa sounds like an amazing best friend.

I would say that some things are over dramatic and somewhat exaggerated. These scenes kind of contrasted with the normal realism of the novel and threw me off. There were incidents were people should have been severely punished (and in the real world they would have) but a seemingly well-placed excuse solved everything, which bothered me.

The ending was wholy unexpected, but still amazing. Beware, it is quite a cliffhanger, but I definitely would love to read the next book.
