This week's book is Waterfall by Lisa Tawn Bergren.
"Jack Sparrow" by Hans Zimmer (from The Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest)
First off, I love Hans Zimmer's music, and all of the Pirates soundtracks. There's a scene in the beginning of the book, when Gabi gets thrown back in time and finds herself in the middle of a battle. This song, being from a movie soundtrack, represents that scene.
"Broken" by Ramin Karimloo
Gabi is broken. Her father was just killed in a freak car accident, and even though it was months ago, it's still hard for her to deal with, but she's good at putting on a brave face. This song is her, at the beginning of the book.
"If You're Going Through Hell (Before the Devil Even Knows)" by Rodney Atkins
Gabi is thrown into a world that she's not at all familiar with. She knows some things from her parents' history lessons, and she does know Italian (even the correct dialect), but she constantly has to find her way through this strange, medieval world. She always has to tell herself to keep going, keep acting like she knows what she's doing before she's found out.
"Breaking Through" by Audrey Assad
Gabi, though having only been to church on Easter and Christmas, knows that whatever just happened, it happened for a reason. Throughout the book, she keeps trying to figure out the reason it's happened, and what she's supposed to do in medieval Italy. This song is about looking for, finding, and noticing what's unseen, and that's exactly what Gabi does.
"Skyfall" by Adele
The main conflict in the book (besides the romance between Gabi and Marcello) is Gabi, Marcello, and Luca trying to find Lia, and doing whatever it takes to find her. They will stand together in their quest, even if their world starts to crumble. This song embodies that. [Note: I couldn't find Adele's single on Spotify, so the song on the playlist is a tribute to her single "Skyfall".]
"Dream For You" by Casting Crowns
Gabi thought she could never find love. Faced with a situation that can't be explained by anything but faith, and finding life and love in the strangest of places, she discovers that it's God's plan for her. This song is about that.
"I'll Follow You" by Shinedown
Near the end of the book, Marcello finds that he is in love with Gabi. He would follow her anywhere, no matter what. He would do anything for her. This song is about that intense love and loyalty.
"Walk Me Down the Middle" by The Band Perry
This song is kind of adorable. Marcello and Gabi are also adorable. To me, this is what Gabi is saying to Marcello. She is so in love with him, and wants the world to see that he is hers, and she is his. (The lyrics also especially fit, with Lady Rossi having been with Marcello.)
"It All Fades Away" from The Bridges of Madison County
Marcello. This is Marcello singing to Gabi. That's all I can say. This song is absolutely beautiful, and I could easily imagine Marcello having Steven Pasquale's voice.
"Fount of Love" by Jimmy Mitchell
This one is another instrumental. It's just so pretty and beautiful, and it actually has a medieval sound to it, I think. It also sounds like a waterfall. (See what I did there? ;)) This song describes the book as a whole.
