Genetically Engineered Humans, What Could Go Wrong? | The Ones by Daniel Sweren-Becker

The OnesThe Ones
By Daniel Sweren-Becker
The Ones #1
Published September 6, 2016
304 Pages
Sci-Fi, YA

This book was provided to me from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. I swear on my bookshelf that this has not affected my opinion of the book.

Cody has always been proud of being a One. She and her boyfriend James were two of the lucky babies from the 1% of the U.S. population that were randomly selected to benefit from genetic engineering. Now, she and the rest of The Ones are excelling. They are healthy, beautiful, and talented. They aren't otherworldly, just perfect. And to some, that's not fair. The Equality Movement, capitalizing on the growing fear and jealousy, gains political traction and actually outlaws their existence. Society shows its darker side as The Ones are marginalized. The line between right and wrong blurs in the face of injustice and Cody becomes closer to a group of radical Ones intent on fighting back. James begins to fear just how far she is willing to go for the cause.

Kady's universe is a lot different from ours. Actually, it is pretty much the same but they know a lot more about it due to the advancements in wormhole jumping, battle spaceships, and artificial intelligence.

But Kady does not really care about that right now. All she cares about are the space ships dropping bombs on her planet and the fact that she has to plan an escape with the boy that broke her heart that morning.

As it turns out, just escaping is not enough.

Kady also has to survive biological attacks in the form of mutating viruses, psychotic artificial intelligence, and a lethal spaceship bent on revenge that is quickly catching up to them.
When the livelihood of the entire fleet is endangered, questions of morality, practicality, and probability complicate the already chaotic attempt to retreat.

They have the whole universe to run in, but nowhere to run to.

Review

*Disclaimer*
I received this book from CBB Book Promotions in exchange for an honest review. This did not affect my rating of the book.

The Burned Bridges Protocol was a interesting mix of science fiction, dystopian societies, and psychology. It explored so many different ideas, but everything was executed perfectly in the mere 200 pages. This was just a novella, but I would love if it was expanded into its own series (which I REALLY hope happens *hint hint*).

The New Edinburgh colony is stranded in space with a mission-- regain Earth. No one has set foot on the planet for hundreds of years, and it is up to Lilliane, Tomain, Cleo, and Becca to undo the mistakes of their ancestor and reclaim their home planet. But, as they approach their final pit stop before Earth, it becomes clear that someone does not want them achieving this goal. Together, they must fight selfishness, greed, and sassy computers to go home.

The characters were complex and the multiple perspectives, while hard to keep up with, portrayed every character in a unique way. Everyone (even the computer) had their own unique voice and role in the story. No one was left behind.

I loved the relationship between Lillane and Tomain. They have the playful humor of twins, but you could also tell that they really loved each other. They had their ups and downs, but at the end of the day, they stayed true to each other.

The relationships between the rest of the crew of the ship were also entertaining.

I also loved the subtle romance in the book. I mean, you really had to look for it sometimes, but it was still sweet and touching (and heartbreaking). Personally, I think that romance should not be the main focus in science fiction or dystopian novels, so this was perfect for me.

The plot was quick and suspenseful and full of action. A lot of events happen in this book, but nothing felt rushed or glanced over, which is hard to achieve for such a short book.

This was a quick read, but it will leave me thinking for a long time. The emotion, action, and suspense packed into this short novel is enough to keep me happy for a while.

I would recommend this book to fans of Across the Universe by Beth Revis, science fiction fans and any dystopian fans.

I give The Burned Bridges Protocol by Abigail Borders five stars.

An excerpt from Evolution:

We run down the narrow alley and take the first turn, then another. We keep running, moving. I don't even notice my surroundings until, at last, we slow to a stop. The smell hits me first—the stench of piss, of something rotten, all condensed into a small space. Breathing hard, we stand in the street and look around us. We're in a main thoroughfare now, judging from the traffic, but it’s still narrow. I feel squashed, smothered. On all sides, a crowd throngs around us. Most of them are dressed in rags. Hollow faces huddle three or four bodies deep against both edges of the road, dirty, hopeless, and lost. Many of them are children.

I'm scanning their faces frantically before I even realize what I'm doing. "Oscar," I hear myself whisper. It hits me, and I break off before I can call out his name. Before I can start running again, sifting through the masses of them.

Apollon's hand clamps onto mine, but he says nothing. He and Jonas are focused on Jacob, who is shaking violently. Tears are pouring from widened eyes down his face. I want to help him, but all I can do is stand here trying not to break down, myself.

"We need to find somewhere to regroup," Jonas says quietly. "Get out of this mess."
I cast around for somewhere to go, but as far as I can see, it's piles upon piles. People, and people, and buildings looming over them. There's no breathing room. No space. I have to force my breath to steadiness. It's too much.
There is a commotion on the street ahead, maybe a block away. The ragged masses push away from the center, squashing and trampling each other in the process. We're caught in a wave of motion and carried backward, but still we try to look. Where the commotion started, there's a group of figures, similarly dressed in black with blue bandanas. They're moving down the street toward us.

The wave of people suddenly backlashes from the other direction, and we're pushed the opposite way from before. We manage to finally see why. On our opposite side, there's another group of people. These are dressed primarily in white. One of them, clearly a leader, wears a purple doo rag and carries what might be the biggest gun I've ever seen. He raises it toward us.

Excerpt

I sat in my room on the couch near the window staring out at the last bit of gold staining
the sky. I couldn’t place the feeling growing inside me. It was as if the flavor of Ruby’s
butterscotch and Penn’s music still lingered on my tongue, a taste that was both bittersweet and
totally divine.
This place was more beautiful than I ever could have imagined, but it was more
confusing, too. It felt as if a conversation was going on around me, but I could only hear bits and
pieces of it, and now I was trying desperately to string those bits together to make a sentence that
I could actually understand.
The room was growing dark, but I didn’t feel like turning on the bright light of the
chandelier that hung at the end of my bed. In the shadows, I almost became a part of the room.
Miss Gellner had always admonished us to go to bed by nine o’clock each night. “Sleep
feeds beauty,” she always used to say. But I wasn’t at all tired.
Just as I was about to get up from the couch to crawl into bed, there was a small tap at the
door. Before I had a chance to respond, the door cracked open, letting the yellow light from the
hallway spill into the room. The Congressman’s large body stood silhouetted in the doorframe.
“Ella?” he called, poking his head into the room.
I sat up straighter on the couch and arranged a content expression on my face.
“Please, come in,” I said, pressing down the tremble in my voice.
The Congressman strode into the room and sat beside me on the couch. The light was
nearly gone from the sky and the only bit of illumination in the room was the yellow rectangle of
light in the doorway. Sitting in the dark next to him felt too intimate, and I wished I had at least
turned on a lamp.
“How was your first full day in your new house?” the Congressman asked.
“It was lovely.” My face flushed at the lie, thinking of all the things that had happened
during the day that I knew I shouldn’t mention. Had he heard about that woman, Rhonda, and her
crazy rant? Or about my swim in the pool? Or the forbidden piece of candy Ruby had given to
me? I feared all of my secrets were written on my face as clearly as the words in Ruby’s book of
fairytales, but the easy look on his face suggested he couldn’t see them.
“I brought you a little something,” the Congressman said.
I hadn’t noticed the small box he held until he placed it in my hands. The box was flat
and rectangular, covered in soft, white satin.
“Go on, open it,” he said.
I cracked the lid and stared down at the gold chain that glittered ever so softly in the dim
light. On the end of it was a round pendant. I lifted it up and held it towards the light so that I
could see that the gold pendant was encircled with a ring of shining diamonds. Inside something
was engraved in loopy script.
“It’s your name,” he said, reaching out to run his finger over the lettering. “And on the
other side it has our address and phone number.” He cupped the side of my face in his hand. “Let
me put it on you.”
My hands shook and I turned away from him, lifting the hair from off my back. The
scooped back of my nightgown left me feeling bare, and without my hair to cover me a chill
brought goose bumps to my skin.
The Congressman reached his large arms around my body so the cold metal of the
pendant rested across my collarbone.
“Now you’ll never forget where you belong,” he whispered next to my ear.
I reached down and touched the front of the pendant. “It’s beautiful,” I said, “Thank you
for thinking of me.”
“You’re easy to think about, Ella.”
My name sounded peculiar on his lips.
His hand still rested against the bare skin of my shoulder, but he didn’t attempt to move
it. Leaning forward, he brushed his lips lightly against my cheek.
When I raised my eyes, the Congressman’s wife was standing in the doorway. In one fluid
motion the Congressman removed his hand from my shoulder and scooted away from me.
“Elise, what wonderful timing,” he said, standing. “I just gave Ella her new tag.”
He stood and flipped on the light to the chandelier, casting the room with such bright,
yellow light that I had to shield my eyes. Even so, I didn’t miss the strange look that passed
across the Congressman’s wife’s face.
“Wonderful,” she said, walking across the room to where I sat. “Let’s have a look.”
She only gave the pendant a passing glance before turning to her husband.
“It’s late. Don’t you think we should let Ella get to sleep?”
The Congressman nodded, smiling at his wife. “Goodnight, Love,” he called behind him.
A moment later the two of them closed the door, leaving me alone under the bright lights of the
chandelier.

Warning! This is the FIFTH book in a mostly-great series, so if you haven't read the first four books and are interested in reading the series, I highly recommend you don't read this review and start the series from the beginning! Thanks!

In this installment in the attention-grabbing, thrill-filled Maximum Ride series by James Patterson, the Flock explores the circumstances around a catastrophe involving---you guessed it--millions of fish dying somewhere near Hawaii, relationships strengthen and evolve between two specific characters (insert winks and nudges here), and Max learns some lessons about adults and working with them.

Does it sound like your kind of book yet? Me, neither.

The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins

Hey everybody! Cassia here! So, the Catching Fire movie came out last night, so I thought I would review The Hunger Games. I did not go last night, but I am going tomorrow, opening weekend again like the first movie. ;) Without further ado, here's the review!

The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins

Katniss Everdeen is disgusted by her society. Not necessarily the people, but the way it’s run: everyone is poor, taken advantage of, the favorites are treated special, and the Hunger Games. Every year, one male and one female from the ages of 12 to 18 are forced to compete in a fight to the death. On live TV. What could possibly be more horrific? The people of the Capitol enjoy it. It is accepted as a fact, but for people like Katniss, people that fight just to survive, who are starving, it is the worst possible fate, especially if you’re from District 12. When her sister Prim is picked to basically go to her death, Katniss volunteers to save her. Does Katniss have the heart to kill 23 other teenagers, in self defense or not?

Alright, everyone’s heard of this book. Or the movie. Or something. However, I am still going to keep it spoiler-free. Now, I have read better books, but something about Collins’ style and storytelling drew me in.

“You can't change human nature without first changing the law.”

It's after the Second Civil war and a heck of a lot has changed.

Unwinding: A completely LEGAL procedure targeting thirteen to eighteen year-olds that basically takes out all of their organs and spreads them out to people who 'need' them.
Storking: Leaving your baby on someone else's front steps. Completely legal as long as the house owner doesn't catch you.

In case you can't tell, Neal Shusterman's future is Fudged. Up.

At least, Connor, Risa, and Lev think so.
